Recently, we visited a local not-for-profit organisation who help different people with the community. The Woodworks art cafe is based in Lowestoft, Suffolk which is run by founder Kinsey. The aim of the cafe is to improve mental health and well-being of all ages through the use of arts, crafts, music, and peer support groups.
Kinsey opened the cafe 2 years ago at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic through personal funds; initially the organisation focused on peer support groups and craft classes all of which were held virtually via Zoom. Once the risk of Coronavirus had been minimised and lockdown restrictions were lifted, these classes and groups transitioned to be held in person, and more things like these were made available to the public.
During one of our visits we participated in what Kinsey calls ‘cat therapy’- AKA the Cat cafe. We got to sit back, relax and love 3 gorgeous cats for the hour… we would highly reccommend!
Woodworks Art Cafe is run by volunteers and donations. All money received goes directly back into the business to offer more classes and resources to those who need it, the selfless spirit surrounding this cafe really creates a sense of pride and unity within the local community. As a result of the incredible work this cafe does, they just won the FSB (Federation of Small Business) award for Diversity & Inclusion in the East of England- a very well-deserved title!
During our interview with owner Kinsey, we asked how we and others can help, and she listed several ways including, but not limited to, volunteering where possible to support demand within classes and the cafe, donating any craft supplies, food, electrical goods etc.
Working alongside organisations that are actively giving back to society like the Woodworks Art Cafe is a top priority for us at Bison; we want to use our influence as an SME to promote positive change and support causes that affect each and every one of us, whether that be directly or indirectly.
